Things to Do During Black History Month in Murfreesboro, TN
The African American population has contributed to the American and Canadian societies in big ways. It is for this reason that the Black History Month is celebrates across the month of February in USA and Canada. Members of libraries and in the film, world explain these contributions to the people through different art forms. For several years in history, black men and women have not just opposed forced labor in regressive systems but have also been able to offer creative thoughts and innovative expressions.
Here’s a look at how the Black History Month is celebrated in the city of Murfreesboro, TN:
- Celebration of Voting Rights: Voting rights of the African Americans have been celebrated at the Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro. Several events to showcase the importance of the Black History Month are organized here, which includes several lectures.
- Legacy of the First Black Newspaper: Murfreesboro Union was the first Black newspaper to be published in the city with different types of news from the African American community. The history of this newspaper and stories associated with it are often discussed during Black History Month.
- Visit to the Benevolent Cemetery: This is a historic site in Murfreesboro which is set to receive a new lease of life. Located off Church Street, it was covered with broken headstones and brushes for several years, until recently. Several hundreds have been buried here, including members of the Buffalo Soldiers. Once renovated, it will be a wonderful place to visit, not just during the Black History Month, but otherwise as well.
- Bradley Academy Museum: Museums serve as excellent areas for spreading knowledge about the African Americans and their contributions. One example of this is the Bradley Academy Museum, which had hosted “Black History: Past, Present and Future” last year. Expect them to organize programs on similar lines in 2022. Expect to see different kinds of films on the Black history theme here as well.
- Events at Patterson Park: Special programs may be organized at the Patterson Park in the city, one or more of which may be sponsored by the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County. One may even be able to see quizzes that pit schools against each other in friendly competitions to be held here.
- Check Listings on Local Channels: Stories of some of the famous African Americans in Murfreesboro are likely to be told through documentaries on local channels during the Black History Month. For example, a documentary on King Daniel Ganaway, who’s a celebrated African American photographer and a descendant of an American slave, was presented last year.
- Mclemore House Museum: Located in Franklin, TN, this place is being managed by the African American Heritage Society and attempts to preserve artifacts of the Williamson Country African American culture. One can look at the museum’s website and check the different events which are being organized here during Black History Month.
- Discovery Center: Many people may not know several scientific discoveries have also been made by African Americans. To know more inventions such as CCTVs and AC units, one can always visit the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro.
